Academic

Postgraduate study at the University of Cambridge is intense and very intellectually demanding, so the University has high academic entry requirements. You are normally expected to hold or to have achieved by the start of your course:

minimum of a good upper second class (good 2:1) honours degree from a UK university or an equivalent standard from an overseas university; and

completion of, or intermission from any current training or education course

You should be aware that meeting the University’s or departments’ minimum academic requirements does not guarantee entry; it is only one of the factors taken into account when academic selectors make their decision.

Many other factors are also important, such as suitability for the course, proficiency in English, relevant experience, references, availability of a suitable supervisor, and the number of available places.

However, if you do already have funding for your study in place, you can provide details of this with your application.

College membership

All applicants who are made a formal offer of admission will receive an offer of College membership. The University of Cambridge is a collegiate university, and all its students are required to be members of a College.

All applicants are required to meet a minimum English language requirement before you are admitted to your proposed course of study.

This section guides you through the postgraduate application process, from finding your ideal course, to receiving an offer.

1. Research your course

Before applying you should thoroughly research your prospective course, including its requirements, deadlines and course costs.

Information on all our postgraduate courses are in the Course Directory. Check that you meet the entry requirements of the course you want to study.

We usually update the Course Directory on 1 September with information for admission in the following academic year.

2. Check the deadlines

There are two deadlines that you need to consider: the application deadline and the funding deadline.

3.Register for the Applicant Portal

You submit your application through the Applicant Portal. Once you have selected your course in the Course Directory, click the Apply Online button to be directed to the Applicant Portal.

4.Contact your referees

You will need two academic references to support your application, and you will need to submit your referees details via the Applicant Portal.

Your referees will then receive an automated reference request. You should ensure you already have their consent before you apply.

5.Research the Colleges

All postgraduate students are a member of a College. In your application to study, you will be asked to indicate your College preferences or you can choose to make an open application and have a College allocated for you.

6. Apply for funding

A number of the University’s major sources of funding can be applied for through the Applicant Portal. Please ensure you leave plenty of time to complete these sections.

7. Application fee

Once you have finished writing your application, uploaded all required supporting documents and received references, your application is ready to be submitted.

If you are applying for a masters level course you will be asked to pay the application fee before you can submit your application. Check the application fee page for more information.

8. Interview

Most departments/faculties will want to interview you if your application is accepted to the next stage in the admissions process.

Some scholarships and studentships will also invite shortlisted candidates for interviews. Most interviews will be conducted via video conferencing or telephone.

Applicants for this course should have achieved a UK Good II.i Honours Degree.

If your degree is not from the UK, please check International Qualifications to find the equivalent in your country.

The Department of Clinical Neurosciences considers applicants from all backgrounds, not only Neuroscience.

All PhD students are required to submit a thesis of no more than 60,000 words within a maximum of four years of study (full-time). This is examined at a viva by two examiners, one internal and one external.

Other

All PhD students are probationary in their first year and are required to undergo formal assessment (by written report and viva) at the end of their first year, which they must pass.

If successful, the student moves from being “probationary” to being formally registered for the PhD and can proceed with their project.

Selection Process

Applications are considered as they are received (rolling admissions throughout the year, interviews are done in four batches over the year for each term’s intake as well as the funding round). Interviews for the funding round are held in one large group, early January, all other interviews soon after the application deadline for each term.

Applicants who apply by the December funding competition deadline will be reviewed in January and can usually expect to receive a decision in February for admission to the Department. Funding announcements usually start being announced from March onwards.

All other applications are then considered on a rolling basis for the remaining terms and candidates are notified of outcomes 2-3 weeks after application deadline and interviews.

How to Find a Supervisor

We advise all applicants to try to contact supervisors before applying. Applicants have to have a named supervisor on their application form as we do not assign supervisors.

Applicants can still apply to that supervisor if they do not hear back from them as the application is reviewed by supervisor as well as the graduate committee. The list of current research projects is available here .
